Models of the Earth's layers...
It's June!
It is hard to believe that the year is drawing to a close.
May was full of exciting learning opportunities for our grades three and four students. Our trip to see the Goldeyes was lots of fun. We cheered, ate and laughed our way through the game... which sadly the "Fish" lost. A HUGE thank you to our Parent Council for their funding of this event in appreciation of the grades three and four work with Green Kitchen and Recycling Teams. The kids work really hard on a daily basis year round for our school and it was nice to see their work appreciated.
Our bicycle safety workshop was hugely successful. Students got the opportunity to learn about bike and helmet safety,
as well as hand signals to use on the roads. It was fun to watch the kids wobble their way through the course trying to remember which signal to use. (Many used all three to ensure that one was correct! Very funny!) Our trip to the Legislative Building was also a wonderful learning experience. We had an information filled morning on our tour inside the building; and then spent the afternoon on a scavenger hunt. We visited the monuments and statues on the grounds recognizing those individuals and groups of people who made a significant difference in the lives of Manitobans today. Some of us even got to meet and shake hands with Premier Greg Selinger... That was exciting! Thank you so very much to the incredible parent support we experienced at these events! We couldn't do these activities without your help!
We have another very exciting month planned for June. In social studies we are almost finished our province and territory projects. Presentations will be happening in the next two weeks. We just started using the GPS units again and will be continuing our work with them in the coming weeks. Students will be learning to mark their own waypoints. In science we will continue our study of Rocks and Minerals. On June 26, we will culminate our study of R&M with a venture out to Stony
Mountain's Rock Quarry. We will need parent volunteers on this trip as well, so please mark your calendars if you are interested.
Our last Senior Buddies meeting will take place on Thursday, June 19. It will be an outside picnic at The Wellington. We will leave the school at 11:30 and have a picnic with our buddies at The Wellington. The Wellington’s Kitchen Services will provide our picnic lunch. We will return to the school around 1:45pm. A permission form for this will be coming home shortly.
Summer fun... XtraMath (http://xtramath.org/) has proven to be an excellent tool for practice and reinforcement of the basic facts. In 5 to 10 minutes a day, your child’s basic facts will become rote. This would be a valuable “head-start” for students as they head in to the next school year. Parents can register their children, and keep track of their progress. The program is easy and effective... I would highly recommend it!
McNally Robinson has a wonderful program for 10 to 18 year olds that I would highly recommend for our grades 4 to 6
students. It is a "Read and Review" program called "Two Thumbs Up" that encourages children to take out books - for free- and then write a short (50 to 100 words) review of the book. Check out this link for more information:

June promises to be an exciting, fun-filled month and the learning will continue. Thank you for your continued support as we approach year end. Our final class party will be on June 28th. Students who have volunteered to bring snacks for this party are: Eric, Connor, Brennan and Kara.
As always, please contact me if you have any questions or concerns about your child's learning (204-895-8213) or email ([email protected])
Most sincerely,
Kim Burnett
